I’m currently iced in. Not snowed in, like the other 90% of America, but iced in. On Super Bowl week, in Dallas nonetheless. I’m also on my fifth homemade cinnamon roll.

For those who are new to this blog, let me introduce myself. My name is Adam, and I have had some interesting experiences in 2010. I blogged about them for a bit before wasting my computer battery on other things that comprise the world wide web.

Besides graduating, and dating and getting dumped by women, and excessively drinking on various nights, I met some interesting people. I traveled to faraway places, like Las Vegas, and Austin, Texas. Yes, these are very “cultured” places. I saw the Cowboys epic failure of a season, and the Rangers first World Series appearance.

For a brief moment during the summer, when Lebron James reached his greatest point of douchebaggery with the “Decision”, and the thought of a World Series in North Texas was like the thought of me ever maturing , I was in the Peace Corps. Yes, the US government trusted me to spread diplomacy in a large country in South America we like to call Peru.

It was a great thought actually. Loved the country, loved the citizens. Peruvians are an interesting people. Peace Corps Volunteers are also an interesting species.

Ladies and gentleman, feel free to browse my previous entries to get a little bit more of a sense of who I am. Future employers, feel free to stop at this post. Future girlfriends, check out HotorNot.com for my photos. I will be updating this more frequently.

God Blessed America, and God Blessed the Dallas Cowboys,

Adam

Since I finally found time over the weekend to be on the internet for more than an hour, I decided while downloading Entourage Season 7 and The League that I would update this.

A lot has happened since I last updated this blog. Here’s a little rundown before I get to the main topics of this entry.

-I, along with several volunteers went to “El Classico”, the soccer match between the two biggest rivals in Peru, Universitario (La U) and Allianza Lima, a rivalry that has extended for 100 years. The staff in the training center was quite scared of us going, because apparently one person dies every year at the game. We bought the 30 sole seats though, rather than the 12 sole general public seats, so none of us died. The game itself was terrible and featured one goal and a lot of sloppy play. The official team of all of us, except for Mario, was La U and we left feeling disappointed.

-Because I don’t test very well, I was placed in a Spanish class by myself, which I named “education especiale” (special ed) While I don’t get the social interaction I want with other volunteers, the class is basically catered towards me, and I just talk about random things every day with my language instructor, Ivan. I’ve learned words like “subprime mortgage loans” and “bailout” (no I dont have my paper with me to tell you them)

-I cooked again. More on that later

Now for the main parts of my entry. This past Wednesday and Thursday was Fiestas Partias, or the Peruvian Independence Day. It was also my host mom’s birthday, as well as my dad’s back home. I decided to have a party at my house to coincide with the massive amount of family that came up for my mom’s birthday.

Similar to July 4, Rob and I decided to make pizzas. This time, we went for a more ambitious goal and made six pizzas for everyone, which was about 20 Peruvians and 35-40 volunteers. We did not start cooking until the afternoon because my mom made 3 kilograms of ceviche, arroz con pollo, and other delicious foods. Linda came over around 930 am to help with the cooking. My eyes were fried as well from cutting 15 or so onions.

Chris, Juliane and Rob came over around 12, but others didnt show up until 1-130-2 with food and other goodies. My host dad also made buckets of chicha which is a very tasty alcoholic drink.

The party went pretty well, as the last person did not leave until 930 or so, leaving Linda and I to clean up.

The next main event over the past two weeks was Field Based Training. By the time I finally decide to post this, I will have learned where I will be living for the next 2 years.

My field based training was in the department of Lambayeque, a coastal area in the north of Peru, about 12 hours away from Lima. My group of 11 rode on what was called a semi cama bus, where the seat reclines, and we watch shitty movies and eat halfway mediocore food.

We visited four sites in Lambayeque that currently host Peace Corps Volunteers: Zana, Cayalti, Puerto Eten, and Bolivar, Cajamarca, as well as toured the capitol city of the region, Chiclayo. Some volunteers thought they had found their perfect sites when we toured the sites (my buddy Rob for example found Ciudad Eten perfect for him). I did not and am still wondering where my perfect site is going to be.

For field based training, my group and I performed several charlas (lessons) for different groups of different ages on topics ranging from HIV to teaching kids the cup game, a game I learned in jew camp. It was good practice for what happens when we get to site, but I could have used more individual practice.

Anyway thats really all I have.

Today, myself, Zack and Chris (two volunteers who live somewhat close to me) descended on a soccer pitch near where we all live to attempt conversation with little Peruvian kids.

During a break in their games, they started busting out their cell phones and listening to American music. Most of the music was usually what a typical preteen would listen to, but then the disturbing sound of a fourteen year old caused me to just about lose my mind.

The words/melody “oh woahh, oh woahh, oh woahhh” started playing from our little friend John Paul’s phone.

I looked at Zack and Chris, who clearly do not have the level of pop culture comprehension that I do, and said to the little Peruvian kids “Yo neccesito ensenarte bien musica”, which is in Spanglish, and translates to “I need to teach you good music.”

Why did I feel the need to say this?

Because the little Peruvian was being corrupted by the annoying American exports we refer to as Justin Bieber.

But, my friends, you ask “Why doesn’t today suck?” (FYI, if you live in the DFW area and happen to listen to Sportsradio 1310 the Ticket between the hours of 3-7, you’ll know there is a segment entitled: Why Today Doesn’t Suck”)

Because today was dia del pappa… or the Day of St Pedro and St Pablo, which is really only celebrated in the north and in Lima, but Peace Corps gives us a day off.

What did I do on this day off?

I watched four hours of futbol, including two hours of a game that rivaled a U-10 girls game for level of boring (if you don’t understand that reference it’s ok, just substitute the WNBA for it, my dad is probably the only one who has gone through a u-10 girls game) with my buddies Jim and Chris. You might say this is unproductive, but in a country that didn’t qualify for the World Cup, yet STILL throws a giant party on the plaza in its biggest city Lima everyday, it’s a common thing. Plus, it beats what was on in the States at that same time (The View, I looked this up)

Speaking of the Copa Mundial (world cup), I was finally able to watch a US game in its entirety, in HD. By the Pacific Ocean nonetheless. Here’s the view from the restaurant:

Quite possibly the best view I could get while watching a US Soccer Game, other than in South Africa

Since none of you want to read my sports rants, I’ll save my commentary on the US game, and say just that the US got outplayed. Ghana is a decent team, but I’m still going with Argentina to win it all.

On another note, I’m impressed by the amount of US/Mexican soccer fans we have in our group. By the end of the 2nd half, heading into extra time, there were fifteen of us in one restaurant, and people were actually knowledgeable.

Anyway, since I found out I can actually upload pictures pretty quickly, I’ll post a few to show you my first two weeks in Peru:

My best cristiano ronaldo impression

Ceviche- king of all peruvian dishes

Anyway, I should probably put a little more time and talk about actual events that are going on, but I haven’t showered in awhile and since I ran hard this morning/hiked up a tough hill, I should probably get the smell off me.

I´m in the process of writing a couple of decent entries which I will post later in the week, but being that I´m still in a food coma from the food I´ve been eating since Sunday, I´ll keep this short.

A couple of observations:
1. I didn´t realize so many people read this blog. I´ll try to keep the cynicism to a minimum for those who only know me through this blog.
2. I have gotten used to cold showers. They really are not too bad, when you consider I could be in a situation where I dont have a shower.
3. Sports is a recurring theme in my blog, and I thoroughly enjoy being able to stop anywhere in Chaclacayo and watch the World Cup, even if it is on a 10 inch black and white screen.
4. I might be eating better here than I did in Dallas. The only thing my host mother here doesn´t make is the one thing my mother back home specializes in, which is deserts. I haven´t been this full for an extended period of time in awhile.
5. An internet cafe is an extraordinarily interesting place to see various social interactions of people, and how kids are as entranced with RPGs (role playing games, think World of Warcraft) as some of my good friends back home.
6. The last time I was the tallest person in a place, I was at dinner at my home in Plano with my family.
7. Sex and the City is just as entertaining in Spanish as it is in English. Yes, I did watch that show.
8. Runs through cities are made much more interesting when presented with the threat of multiple dogs chasing you and the fact that you have to carry a rock when you are running.
9. I have never had so much fun in a 3 hour class. Ever. (yes, I also learn things)
10. Telenovellas are a lot funnier when you actually get them explained to you in Spanglish.

That´s all for now.

I was told I needed to post something, so here it is.

Before I start I want to personally thank John William´s sister for reading my blog. I´m glad you wasted bandwith on your computer reading this.

I´m very lucky in my training site- I get fed way too well by my host family, get internet whenever I want it, and don´t worry too much about getting stabbed at 4 in the afternoon.

I do, unfortunately, sit for 8 hours a day, with 3 hours of intensive language and other time spent on medical and nutritional items needed for survival. (other content edited for clarity)

We do get breaks though, which I spend sweating through my business casual clothes kicking the futbol (yes, soccer, for the culutrally unaware) or throwing the frisbee until we get called in.

Anyway, I guess I might as well recap my week. Monday was intro to language, where the class is all in Spanish and I have to figure out ways to entertain myself… in Spanish. For those who read Juliane´s or Claire´s blog, I happen to be in her class.

Monday night, I walked back to my house with other volunteers. Problem was I had no idea where I lived. So, I spent an hour at another volunteers house (Courtney) and was given the nickname ¨Hijo Perdido¨ by her host mother while everyone else in that house proceeded to make fun of me in Spanish.

When you don´t understand the language, it´s best to laugh while people make fun of you. Not only do you look like an idiot because you got lost 100 feet from your home, but it makes people more excited to make fun of you. (if this last paragraph didnt make any sense, just move on)

After that debacle, I got lost the next day. We have language classes in our host communities as a way of integrating and better understanding the language, and not only did I end up getting lost going to Claire´s home, I also managed to wake up 30 minutes late. My host family had a good laugh about that one.

Aside from that, it´s nice to bond with other volunteers. Whether destroying little Peruvian kids on the basketball court (score-wise, not physically) or spending money at La Taverna, a bar owned by a friendly Peruvian.

Everything is pretty cheap here. I haven´t been to Lima yet, where prices are much higher. I actually haven´t bought anything but beer (everything else is provided for) but even a giant beer is 3 soles 80 centimos, which amounts to maybe $1.50. This is also why our stipend during training is so small.

As I said in a previous entry, the volunteers are all from different backgrounds. A lot of people did some pretty noble things in other countries before they joined the Peace Corps, which makes for interesting conversation. Kinda makes me wish I had actually done some kind of study abroad besides DC, but that´s another story. People have volunteered in Chile, Mexico, South Africa, and other places. Most are of the democratic persuasion and are much less cynical than yours truly.

I will say though, I do enjoy teaching people the intracacies of the sports industry and teams in general. Especially la Copa Mundial. So many soccer fans in the Peace Corps.

Which brings me to my next point. Because everyone here is fans of Latin American countries or Espana (Spain), little attention is paid to the USA games. Well, actually just the Slovenia game.

Several miscommunications left the volunteers that give a shit about the USMNT thinking that we had lost to the tiny little Eastern European country. It was not until last not that we figured out that it was actually a tie, and that ref from Mali disallowed a Maurice Edu goal in the 86th minute, preventing the USA from taking the lead in Group C. Damn international conspiracy.

Which brings me to this weekend. Myself, along with the other volunteers went to a fiesta in the community of Chachasana last night, about a 15 minute combie (bus) ride away from my home community.

It definitely was not like your typical party, due to the amount of Peruvian music and the lack of dirty dancing in the dance area. At the end, one of the Peruvians in the community put on a giant costume that resembled that giant dragon from a Chinese New Year bash.

Only difference? This guy was hammered and fireworks were spewing from his costume. The reaction from the Peace Corps volunteers was similar to that of the scene when the USA wins the World Cup- total chaos. It was interesting nonetheless.

I would post pictures, but I´m way too impatient to wait an extended period of time for them to upload to the blog. If you want to see them, ask my mother. (My biological one who sends you countless emails to check this site, not my host mother)

Plus, I´m trying this new idea PCV Curtis gave me, where I take songs I like and translate them into Spanish. First up: ¨I Want It That Way¨

Written 6/13/10
My brain hurts.

Honestly, it hasn’t hurt this much in awhile. Not for finals, not for interviews, not for anything.

It’s a good hurt, like the hurt you get when you decide to actually work out right in the weight room. Or run a marathon. Or…. I was trying to compare this to something I’ve done academically, but since I’ve never tried in school… I came up short.

Well, there was this one time where I went to the Kimball Art Museum in Ft. Worth for a seven hour lecture on Impressionism in order to pass an AP Art History class in high school (I ended up enjoying that class for as shitty grades I earned in there).

The reason my brain hurts is I have never uttered the phrase “como se dice?” (how do you say….) so many times in the span of eight hours and had to process words this fast in awhile. En espanol.

What you hear from many RPCVs )returned Peace Corps volunteers and others is that Peace Corps has the best language training program. One of the main reasons for this is not only do you have 4-5 hours of intensive language Monday thru Friday, but during your training, you are placed with a host family.

Most of the time, this family speaks no English. Lucky for me, my host sister is rather proficient in the English language, which helped me in my quest for Spanish fluency. Still though, the majority of conversation was done in Spanish, a tough thing for someone who has one semester of half paying attention, and three semesters of online Spanish thanks to Midland College.

After lunch today, we met our host families that we were going to stay with during PST (pre service training) in Chaclacayo. So far, my host family is pretty cool.

The family consists of mi padre Luis, mi madre Gloria, mi hermana Ruby (veinte y cinco anos) y mi hermano Felipe (veintiuno anos. If you don’t know the words in the previous sentence that did not sound like English, look them up. They also have two cute little dogs, Carmelo y Eka (her name escapes me as well)

Anyway, while I had lunch at the training center, Gloria had cooked up some more food, which I did not mind at all. For the priemiero plato (first plate) we ate pappa a la huancaina, which was eggs and potatoes mixed with a type of queso sauce that I swear I’ve had at the majority of my meals since I arrive in Peru.

For the segunda plato (second plate- main course) we had pollo (chicken) al horro (the translation escapes me) with arroz (rice). It was nice.

After destroying that, I walked around the house with Gloria, and she showed me her garden of various fruits and vegetables. Pictures below:

Edit: ok so it takes an ungodly amount of time to load an image on the internet. I will post them later

It’s amazing what people can do on so little money.

Their family business happens to be an internet cafe, so I get free internet for the next ten weeks. Awesome. However, I really don’t think I’m going to overuse that. While I could skype for five hours at a time, I really don’t want to prevent my host family from losing money. It’s pretty funny- during the day, adolescents and preteens come to the cafe to play a game called Rakipa, similar to World of Warcraft.

From there, Luis, Gloria, Ruby and myself went to a city called Chosica, the city next to Chaclacayo for some shopping.

The place we went to Place Vea, was the first supermercado (supermarket) to open in this area, and the atmosphere was similar to the Whole Foods in Columbus Circle during lunch/dinner (New York City) or Best Buy at 6 am on Black Friday- pure chaos. Hundreds of people crammed into a little (term used lightly) supermarket angling to buy various items needed to sustain life in Peru.

With Luis waiting in the car, Gloria, Ruby and I went to the bread section to wait for baguettes and another kind of bread. It was interesting as other bread was flying off the shelf, and all the while I was getting double takes and someone even tried to reach in mis pantalones…. for my wallet. That was interesting.

After we returned, I hung out with Felipe for a bit, listening to the music he enjoyed. He was a big fan of Daft Punk and classic rock, which makes bonding time a little bit more fun when I showed him my music.

After innundating him with the likes of Pat Green, Cory Morrow, Robert Earl Keen and other artists of a certain genre which most of you who read this probably dislike, him and I watched Superbad with Spanish subtitles. I felt that it was a hell of a lot better to bond over than Crash, Syriana, or No Country for Old Men. I was right. Funny movies always break the ice.

Anyway, it is now 11:30 pm, and I need to be up at 7:15 prepare for my first day of training. Starting tomorrow I’m 8-5 Monday thru Friday. Hopefully by the time you read this in two months, it will be entirely in Spanish.

Kidding. Sarcasm just would not sound the same.

Anyway I’m going to rest my brain. I’ll need it for the training tomorrow and for finding out ways to school the other PCVs on the basketball near my host family home.

6/11/10

Currently, I am sitting on a twice delayed plane en route to Peru. I have already pissed off the passenger in front of me with my belting of several Backstreet Boys ballads, lost a boarding pass, and have introduced my new Peace Corps friend Kelsi to Texas Country music. My butt also happens to be completely numb. We have about three hours of the flight to go (so we land at about midnight) and Tooth Fairy (starring The Rock) is playing. What an absolutely terrible movie to show. I have also been picking up Spanish phrases thanks to another Peace Corps buddy Jeff and the flight attendants, so now my Spanish vocabulary is up to about 15 words.

Yesterday we had staging where we listened to policies and procedures, wrote down thoughts, met people, and ate that crap hotel candy that they provide business meetings with. It was a joy to meet everyone and just kick it.

We span all different backgrounds- from my boy Curtis out of Funkytown (Ft. Worth, Texas for those who are unfamiliar with Texas city lingo) to a volunteer (the name escapes me- there are 56 of us) who played soccer at a Division 3 college.

You can tell lots about an organization when its members come back and work for them, as the four people who worked staging were RPCVs (returned Peace Corps volunteers) who served in Nicaragua, Kiribati and Zambia within the past decade. Granted its a government job that has decent benefits, but these people cared enough about the organization to come back and work for them. It’s kind of cool, and made me a bit more excited about service.

Anyway, staging was pretty nonchalant, and after staging I boarded my favorite piece of public transportation in the world, the DC Metro, with another new PC friend Julianne. I ended up meeting my former professor from the Washington Semester Program at American University, Christian Maisch. It was nice catching up with him and hearing about what to expect climate wise in Peru, different sites to see, and politics of Peru- he is always a good source of information (he also happens to be a Peruvian). Nice coming back to Tenleytown as well- there is an eclectic mix of restaurants in that area, and I enjoyed having the Whole Foods be across the street from me when I was there in the Fall of 2008.

After eating some delicious deep dish pizza, I met up my friend Laura who I hadn’t seen since the Washington Semester program ended. We met up at our old stomping ground, the Front Page at Dupont Circle, drank some cheap American beer (goodbye Miller Lite) and caught up with each other’s lives.

Unfortunately, after some good natured ribbing amongst friends, I had to call it an early night due to the fact that I had to be up at the ass crack of dawn. Granted, my roommate John William and I ended up staying up to watch the conclusion of the Lakers-Celtics game (goodbye HDTV).

Today was all about traveling, spending hours in the airport, and bonding with PCVs. Though my dad gets me to the airport at the most inconvenient times, I have never been to an airport four hours in advance of a flight. Totally annoying. However, it ended up being for the better, as I figured out new music, meeting new people, and eagerly anticipating the first game of the World Cup, Mexico-South Africa (ended in a tie).

I do enjoy watching sporting events at the airport- but watching the World Cup was totally different than watching the Players Championship (pro Golf) as people seemed to watch the match more intently, and the crowd was a mix of people, rather than a bunch of old white dudes in Burberry suits. It’s good that a ton of us PCVs are soccer fans too, makes World Cup watching a bonding experience and more enjoyable in that you can get varying opinions on the game.

Anyway, we get to Miami from DC, no problem. We get to Miami, pick up ourselves a nice Cuban sandwich and met the funniest Puerto Rican Vietnam Vet in the food line. After playing some Egyptian Ratscrew (card game) and watching part of Uruguay-France, PCV volunteer Rob and I think up the great idea to play a little soccer in the airport terminal. This was a great idea, for most of it. Neither of us has very good foot dexterity, which made innocent people in the waiting area seceptible (spelling error) to our errant kicks. This went on for about 45 minutes and included a two year old Israeli kid in the mix as well.

After the PCV who played soccer in college was cussed out by a random passenger, we finished playing, and learned some more card games thanks to PCV Speare as we were waiting out the mechanical details and Rob and I began creating a World Cup pool.

Anyway, that was about it for the day. The next time I write something, I’ll be in Peru. Awesome. Nothin much else to say, I’m probably going to wake Kelsi up to read this over.

I leave Thursday, so today after my friends left, my parents and I packed all my clothes into four bags. I would give you a detailed list of my stuff but it’s probably going to be whittled down within the next 24 hours. All I know is this: My Cowboys jersey is successfully packed. That is of utmost importance. My Spongebob pants are also packed- also of extreme character importance. I am really tired as well- mostly because I’ve eaten a ton these past few days while having spent a minimal amount of time in the weight room.

I already went on a diatribe a couple of entries ago about my feelings for all this so I will leave you with one thought- If I don’t get to watch USA vs. England live, I’m going to be pissed like the tabloids are after getting punked by Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag.

On another note, I saw pictures today of Peace Corps Volunteers in South Africa getting to meet the US Mens Soccer Team. I sincerely hope I get to witness something as cool as that.

Peace out America.

Aside from buying hiking boots and a duffel bag, I have done absolutely nothing to prepare for 27 months in Peru. This is very typical of me- I don’t do anything until the last minute as is.

I have nine days left in Texas. Most of my friends have left for their jobs, or summer school. What the hell am I going to do with that time?

A few ideas:
-Spend more money at happy hour
-Find a way to run when it’s not eleven in the morning
-watch Jerry Springer
- download more songs to my computer
-go sample food at Whole Foods everyday
- be a bum

I’m not going to lie- I do get bored of this lifestyle. My computer only is so fun.
